Floral dreams finally realised

8/04/2009 12:17:00 AM

THEY say life begins at 40, and for Kathryn Amor, it has. Three years ago, the Ballarat woman decided to do something for herself and became a florist.

Her dedication to her dream has paid off - winning a first place award at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show last week. Mrs Amor, a third-year apprentice florist with Whites Florist, took out the Advanced Student Floral Design Competition. It is a major accolade for the now 44-year-old, winning an award in one of the world's top five flower shows.

Competitors were given an hour and a half to create a corporate flower arrangement for the opening of a new business. The piece had to show what kind of a business it was, simply by looking at it. Mrs Amor chose a lighting shop, with her floral piece featuring chrome towel rails, among other props. It was judged on size, dimensions and design. Mrs Amor learned her trade at Marjorie Milner College in Melbourne, where she still travels once a week. "I lot of people had some really great work. I can't believe I won," she said. "My ambition is to be a designer florist and travel the world." The Melbourne International Flower and Garden
