AFTER major success on Sunday, florist Martha Densley is taking the time to smell the roses.
The 19-year-old Warrnambool resident won the World Skills state competition in Melbourne and will compete for the national title next year.
“When I called Mum to tell her I’d won it was like I was on a TV show, she couldn’t stop screaming,” Ms Densley said.
“I’m just so excited.”
To take out the top prize Ms Densley needed to create five different arrangements, including wrist corsages, a wreath and a wedding bouquet.
“We’re pretty much given the flowers in the morning and then it is a full day of arrangements,” she said.
“It is all about letting your mind create what it wants.”
The former Brauer College student is also preparing for the apprentice of the year competition at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.
She began her apprenticeship after her work experience role at a local florist when she was in year 10.
“I’d talked with my careers teacher and we thought I was creative and liked doing arts and craft,” she said.
“I just decided to give it a shot at a florist. It was during Mother’s Day and I really enjoyed it.”
Ms Densley completed her floristry apprenticeship at the Marjorie Milner College in Melbourne and is working part time as a florist from home.
