Hi Everyone,

I'm a floristry student and I'm keen to get some 'hands on' experience in the real world. I am unable to participate in the formal work experience program run by my floristry college because I'm not prepared to put my child into daycare for 5 days a week. (I'm being assessed by portfolio, as are many of my classmates.) BUT I'd still like an opportunity to learn what floristry is really like.

Years ago, there was a Red Cross Florist run by volunteers at Greenslopes Hospital but I've been unable to find anything similar now. Is anyone aware of any opportunities that might exist in Brisbane, possibly on Wednesday afternoons or Saturdays, to get some practice?

Thanks in advance,
Anna.

Hi Anna,
The only problem you may come across doing work experience in a shop is that you won't be covered by insurance, the School usually covers the insurance when you do Work Experience thru them?

Good Luck!

Yes, that was the whole problem. The school made me sign some form agreeing not to do work experience outside their program. Their program, however, would have required me to study 3 days a week and do work experience 2 days a week. That's all good if you don't have little kids. I'm not prepared to put my 3 year old in childcare 5 days a week, 3  is enough.

Happy ending of sorts, though. The beautiful biddies at my Church (North-East Baptist, Nundah) discovered that I'm studying floristry and they have recruited me to help do Church flowers on a weekly / sometimes fortnightly basis. It's good experience and it makes me happy to bring fresh flowers into the Church. As the wise old owl said, they are food for the soul. I think flowers are God's calling card - they show up at all the high and low times in our lives, they show up in a dry dusty old footpath that really shouldn't have flowers growing out of it, they show up when your 3 year old picks them from the front yard and proudly presents you with a bouquet she made. They're special.

I've only got 6 or 7 weeks left of my course and then I'll be job-hunting. Eek. At least I'll have lots of A-lines and church flower arrangements to show prospective employers!

Cheers,
Anna.

Good Luck with the rest of the course Anna and also with the job hunt!

I live very close to that church; and I think its the church for my gorgeous next door neighbour Dina... a 75 year old Philippine woman with a heart of pure gold and flowers growing in every patch of soil in her garden! I agree that flowers are soul-food for us nature lovers!

Good Luck Anna.

As a Church, we sponsor an orphanage in Cambodia. That involves collecting money through out the year and sending them all kinds of provisions - even the most basic things like underwear. A team of people travelled over and helped to build a toilet and shower block and to help them establish an aquaculture business to help fund the orphanage on an ongoing basis.

The children sent over the most gorgeous hand-made flowers, so I"m working on a couple of arrangements using the lillies they made. I think it's so precious that the children sent us such a special gift. I'll post a photo of them when the arrangement is made up. I'm trying to work out what foliage etc to place with it, because being handmade from stockings and wire, all the artificial foliage I have looks quite strange.

Thanks for your kind words Bella. I'm heading out into the big wide world of floristry in the next couple of weeks. All things being well, I'll have my certificate 3 in floristry presented to me on Monday night.

Regards,
Anna.
