Why can't flowers? (Forums : General Discussion : Why can't flowers?) Locked

I cannot understand the public's (some of them) perception of florists -- Florists are a rip off: are too expensive: etc.

No one questions the labour charges of - ie plumbers, electricians, mechanics, builders etc.

Why aren't we seen as tradespeople or even artists?  (how much $ does an artist put on one piece of their work)

Customer says - " oh haven't flowers gone up!" or " you're too expensive - I only want to spend $5 - $7 on a bouquet"  ( can  you even  get a $5 or $7 bunch at the supermarket? --)
OR
your out somewhere and you're asked what do you do and you say - I'm a florist - and the response you get is - " why are flowers so expensive nowdays"

General day to day living has gone up - from groceries, fuel, wages, etc.

Why can't Flowers?

As a business - wages, rents and overheads can and/or do increase each year.

I'm just tired of these types of comments. Is anyone else.

Cheers Siouxsie

I could not agree any more. However, how can we change the public perception? Great to see somebody having their say!

Siouxsie,

Ithink that if florists were more open about what we do with flowers and invited the public into our store to watch what we do, they may have a different perception of our talents and jobs. Most workrooms in stores are out the back where the public can't see how arrangements, wedding flowers etc are constructed and designed. If we worked in open workrooms where the public could see the time and effort we put into our work, it may change their perception. It would also encourage the public to ask questions about what we do and how much time and effort are put into our trade and art.

For what it is worth!!!!!!

Cheers Nic :D

excellent points Siouxsie,
the problem is exactly what Nic has said, florists hiding in back workroooms has been the downfall.
we have always had an open plan shop...no back room!!
this saves much time also...when customers come in you are already there available to serve if necessary.
if they are browsing you can continue on with your work.
customers do love to watch you work...they are interested in the skills involved.....it all comes back to educating your customers.

our workroom is very open and we hide nothing, this is very good education for our customers especially when they see us doing weddings   and as mushy says we get more involved with our customers as they can see us and we can create for them on the spot

My shop is open plan and my friends (customers) can watch me work and we have a chat. They get to see their flowers being made.
