Does anyone know of any government incentives to hire trainees in NSW?

Ok, rang up and found out.

Next question- Has having a trainee in your shop been beneficial financially or time wise?

Also, the 38 hours that a trainee has to do, does that include TAFE time or is it TAFE plus the whole 38 hours in the shop?

eta new question

My business is in Victoria and I would say that an Apprentice is fundamental to how I run my business. In Victoria they don't have to do 38 hours only 13 per week. They can do more if I require them to. If the education supports the training then it is well worth it. (Our Apprentices will only be trained at Marjorie Milner College). Good luck.

When I was at TAFE doing my cert 3 (in NSW) , there was 3 "trainee" florists ( under the government incentives)and for 2 of them thier employer paid for them being away to study at TAFE and 1 worked 4 days and didn't get paid for the day at TAFE. ( Mind you this was close to 10 years ago!)
Maybe it depends on the employer?
If they are on a "traineeship" do they still have the 3 month trail to see if they are working well with your business?Or are you locked in for the duration of the "traineeship"?

We have two trainees at our shop in Tassie and they generally are great.  Because the pay is sooo bad to be an apprentice you really have to want to do it in order to take the position.  We have a three month trial to see if the people are a good fit and to give them an ide of the industry.  Alot of them think that its standing around playing with flowers all day.  Some don't sweep, some don't like dirty water, and some are just not up to the physical nature of this work!  However once you get a good one that you click with you both end up progressing your skills because they bring a new generation into the shop and can give you really interesting perspectives on what looks good and what doesn't.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
D

Well, I have found out more info on traineeships from MEGT. Thanks for the replies.

She came in and done her first day today (full pay, traineeship will come soon). She was soooo enthusiastic and has been trying to get a traineeship for a while so I know she is eager. She kept asking what to do and didn't stand around. She cleaned up without being asked and was very well spoken with customers. She had come in last week for about 2 hours to see if we clicked and I had shown her how to do bows. When she came in this morning(actually waiting at the door for me and I am always early) she had a bag of bows she had been practising and wanted to see if she had done ok, so she definitely is eager.

Rach, they have a 3month trial and if, say, 6 months down the track, I decide to get rid of her and we both agree it can be ended, but if either of us disagree we have a 3rd party make the decision.

Hi,

My name is Crystal 30yrs from Melbourne Victoria

After 14yrs in Retail/Finance, I have decided to follow my dreams and become a florist. I am looking at a traineeship/apprenticeship in Florstry but not sure where to go to apply or who to get in contact with.

I have looked at the Majorie Milner College and all course request that you have a connection to the floral industry.

If you could please point me in the right direction that would be great

Regards,

Crystal
