Florist's art is a passion that grows in bunches

A PASSION for creativity pushed Launceston's Lauren Burt towards a career in floristry. And it seems the 24-year-old's talent has truly begun to blossom after she was named the inaugural Worldskills Tasmania champion for floristry last month. Miss Burt will now compete in the Australian Worldskills finals in Sydney early next year. Her win comes on the back of a third placing at the national Interflora Florist of the Future finals in Adelaide last year. Miss Burt works at the Kings Meadows Florist and is the author of the Leaves&Stems floristry blog. Her love for flowers stems from childhood and she said she draws her inspiration from European floristry as well as a range of natural styles. "There's definitely more to it that playing with flowers," she said. "It is an art form - except you are working with nature's most beautiful produce. You work with colours, you work with textures. "It is a way to express yourself." Miss Burt said her skills and experience were thoroughly put to the test at the Worldskills state finals in Hobart. She was provided with a set selection of flowers to create items including wedding bouquets, corsages and floral wreaths.
