I usually buy from wholesalers or direct from the grower. I have decided to look into the markets at Rocklea. I do find the auction system very confusing.  :S I am used to the sydney markets, picking out my own flowers ( for my own quality assurance) How can you tell if what you are bidding on is the best quality? or building up the relationship with the grower/wholesaler? I am sure this system is very effect (otherwise it wouldn't be used) But I am completely at a loss...If anyone can explain this type of market/auction systems to me it would be greatly appreciated!

It's very confusing to an outsider, but I believe Christensens Flower Auctions have a person employed to help you learn how to use it. From memory, his name is Paul McGarry and he's lovely. He'll explain the system to you and you can go along and watch what's happening. It's all computerised.

Here's the URL for their site: Flowerauction.com.au

Cheers,
Anna.

Hi I have been buying from the auction for 4 years, they will help you once you get the hang of it, it is very easy.

p.s Paul is no longer working at the Auction, just give them a call and they will help you out, all the buyers will help you as well.

If you feel a little daunted by buying at the Auction (and let's face it, who wouldn't first time around), there are Flower Agents who will do the buying for you and charge you 12% commission.
I used to have Alicia at Spontaneous Flowers buy for me (by simply faxing through an order the day before) and she would organise the packing and courier to have the flowers sent up to me (I'm on the Sunshine Coast), and I rarely had trouble.
This way, a buyers experience helps you with buying from top quality growers and in getting what you want first time - as they are always buying a large amount and have the upper hand over smaller time buyers.
Visit Alicia at spontaneousflowers.com.au or call her on 0413 661 765.
Good Luck!
