Just got engaged! :D  Very exciting! But have a delemma about the flowers! I know that I am very particular and know exactly what I want ( but as a florist am aware of the variables!)but is it worth doing it myself the day before or letting staff member make it up.. So much will be going on the day before the wedding I am in 2 minds as what to do? Especially with the setting up the reception! As it is my own business I naturally want to have it as a show case of my own creativity.Has anyone done their own wedding flowers or did you leave it up to you staff? If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it! Cheers Rach

I did my own wedding flowers. At the time (1986) my parents owned a florist shop & I worked for them, we had 3 other weddings on the same day. Of course mine was last, needless to say a late night was had by all. On the saturday I had my hair done & then had to deliver one of the other weddings on my way home!!!!!
If you believe that your staff will do exactly what you want then let them, otherwise it is up to you...be careful, I have seen weddings done by florists wanting to showcase their talents & they have been overdone......wanting to show everything that you are capable of instead of showing the best that you are capable of. good luck.
By the way I am still married to the same man & we have 2 great boys aged 18 & 22.

Doing your own wedding flowers would be a massive hassle considering all the other things that a bride has on her mind. If you are superstitious it is also considered bad luck.

Hey Rach,
I did my own wedding 2005 (with the help of 2 of my Bridesmaids that are also florists). I don't think I would do it again, whilst nothing went wrong, it all looked beautiful, I was exhausted on the day and the timing was so tight I didn't really enjoy the whole build up (getting pampered) As Mushy said if you trust your staff or friends get them to look after it.

Cheers,

Hi Rach,
Congratulations on your engagement.     I did my own wedding flowers in 2008 and wouldn't change that.  My wedding was a simple, casual ceremony in our garden at home. It was in the middle of January (I'm in QLD) so it was pretty hot.  My flowers were simple, Bride posy, maid posy, flowergirl wand and 3 corsages.   I was up really late the night before, had to get kids - bathed, feed and in bed before I could start the flowers.  I was happy with what I had made and I was still putting the final touches to the candleabra arrangements  1 1/2hr before the ceremony.

Decide what will work for you.

All the best.

Congratulations Rach! :D What an exciting time for you.

I was married just over 12 months ago and had the same dilema. I weighed up the pros and cons and decided to get my old boss to do them for me. In the end, our wedding was being held 1 1/2 hours away from where we lived so we were going up a few days before the wedding, and I didn't want to buy the flowers on the Monday for a Sat wedding, I didn't want to try to shove them all in the car with all of the other things we had to take up, and I didn't want to spend the day/night before the wedding stressing about getting my flowers done when I could spend that time with friends and family (some of which had come from overseas) and organising last minute things.
The flowers didn't turn out *exactly* as I wanted them, (which was partly my fault because we didn't discuss proper back-up options - and of course I did end up needing to use the back-up) but if I could go back in time, I still wouldn't have done them myself.
It sounds like a big job the day before the wedding, so maybe if you compromised and did the bouquets yourself (so at least that way you know that you have made your bouquet), and  left the reception for your staff to do?
When are you getting married? And what flowers are you thinging of? I'm being very nosey but I'm just excited for you

Congratulations!!  I had the same dilemma and decided to hand the job over to someone else.  On the day I wasn't very happy I think I expected more but when I look back at photos I think they looked amazing.

I am sure you have time and depending what you are having couldn't you do a trial bouquet with your staff so you get what you want and are confident they can do it for you?

Dannii,
I  am hoping to get married in March, April next year, as for flowers?? I love earthy ,rustic colours so I am hoping to go along that theme with flowers.. but who knows i will probably change my mind a gazillion times!! lol.!! I love the sunset callas and dried lotus pods as a starter... OHH the decisions!! I know it is a year away , but time passes very quickly!! :D

Hi Rach,

It can also be considered bad luck to do your own wedding bouquet. Depends on how superstitous you are about thins like that

Cheers Nic

Rach, congratulations. I didn't really bother much with that superstitious stuff. I thought this is my bouquet and I really want to do it, BUT when it came time to do it I was so over come emotionally that I couldn't. My hands were shaking, I was teary, an absolute mess really. Luckily my best friend, whom was also a florist, stepped in and did it and I took over the bridesmaids, flower girl and head pieces, which I had no problem doing. Maybe it is bad luck after all !!!! We did this the night before the wedding and I had plenty of time to get ready as the wedding wasn't until 4pm. In fact, I was bored out of my brain. My girl friend did a wonderful job. No, it wasn't exactly what I had envisaged, but I was sssooo grateful she was there and it could have been a complete disaster if I had kept trying. Lots of Luck

I think it is good that I am not superstitious then lol  :D

Anyway it's a considerable overload , considering how much stress planning a wedding involves itself

I did my reception and brides maids flowers and asked my co worker (head designer) to do my bouquet.  She knew the style of the other flowers and colours etc and I let her do whatever she wanted.  It was great!  I got to hang out with my friends/ second family at work doing my flowers the day before with coffee and everyday chatter which was exactly what I needed, and then had someone else set them up the day of.  To be honest if I hadn't been doing the flowers I would have been stressing at home counting my stress pimples!
