Hi Everyone

Need some advice.

Got a wedding coming up and the bride is having Arum lillies for her and the maids bouquets.

She has asked for the arums also in the reception table centres and church arrangements.

I have always had difficulty using arums into Oasis because of the softness of their stems...Are there any tricks to making it easier to push into the oasis without trashing the stems......?

Thanks in advance

Heather :)

Hello Heather,
For calla or arum staying upright in oasis you can use a kebab skewers - just insert the wood inside the stem of calla, you may tape it or not. The same trick works for hyacinths and tulips. If you need more flexibility use 2 pieces of 20 g wire on both sides of the flowers stem (parallel ech other) and then tape it. Another trick to bend calla stems - peel a bit of epidermis (stem skin tissue) from flower to the end on the side where the curve will be. Hope it may help.

The only other thing I could add to Val's comments are make a hole in the Oasis foam first. You can wind wire around the end of the stem before you insert and this stops the stem end from splitting.

I skewer up the stem too and i usually push my finger into the oasis to make a hole first. So, I agree with both comments. I so this with hyacinths too but havent reall had to do it for tulips as much.

I put a small skewer up the stem and also wrapp a short wire around the base before I insert into the oasis. I haven't thought to put a whole first.. I will use that tip

Here is another question for you ladies.....Do they open after they have been cut?  I have heard that if they are closed when they are cut, they do not open after they have been cut....?  Is this correct?

Hi Heather,

Not really, if at all. I think this is because they don't produce much ethylene gas or benifit from the sugar in flower food. Always buy at stage you want them.

Cheers,
Annette
