I think your breakdown of costings is good. Customers come in with a photo saying that they want exactly the same as the picture but not taking into consideration the cost of flowers, sundries & labour. Also if another florist has quoted them a set price & they come to you and you work it out at $100 or more expensive than the other florists quote, the customer thinks that your over charging when the original florist is under charging. It makes it hard for everyone.
Carol Jul 29th 2008 I agree with you under cutting does not do anyone any favours look at all the time and money that the pasionate florist puts into extra training i am always doing workshops, i have been asked to be involve in budget weddings no way i have worked to hard to build a reputation of providing quality work i recently had a bride spend $15.000 on her wedding $160.00 on flowers then had the cheek to say oh it was not really what i wanted i certainly have learnt a lesson from that.
$426.00 is interesting but I don't know if my customers would pay this. How do we educate the public that our time is worth as much as a any trade like building, electrical etc. Very interesting I think I need to spend more time looking at these things keep putting them up!
Thanks FlowerGoss.
I certainly don't think my customers would pay that price for this arrangement although I think we have every right to charge this kind of price. I probably wouldn't mark up 200% but I wouldn't do it for $160 either!!! I agree with Chillaxe keep throwing these at us because it really does make me think about my prices.
Hi James,
I am not a florist, but dedicated to the success of the industry. Yes, I do think that people should pay more for the services of a good florist and that good florists will have to pay goo dmoney for good flowers and sundries - it all costs - especially a good florist!! ;-)
I was wondering what people thought of a different costing model for event flowers - which is what we are talking about here.
Have a starting price - this is the price to engage the florist. Depending on the event it could be say $200 for a "regular" wedding.
Then only have a 100% mark up, so the above would be $284.35.
What this does is set value to the service of having a florist create for the client and then entices the "buyer" to be able to get more flowers cheaper once past the initial outlay.
This may also help to rid you of "buyers" who will essentially only waste your time with a $160 wedding.
Essentially, this is the same thing people in the hospitality industry do when quoting for events. Really this is a similar service and should have a similar pricing model. eg. Basic starting at $$ , fancy starting at $$$ , whiz bang starting at $$$$ , etc
May be worth a thought and interested to see the feedback.
